ECUADOR COUNTRY FOR BIRDWATCHERS
Early in the morning, your guide will be waiting for you in your hotel. He will drive you to Yanacocha Reserve in the high cloud forest on Pichincha’s volcano at 11,300ft, traveling to the northwest of Quito crossing the west slope of the Andes range through the old road Nono – Mindo, one of the best areas to see birds. Yanacocha reserve is the beginning of this way, it protects 964 ha of elfin Polylepis forest.
As far as we are aware, the reserve contains the entire world range of this very rare hummingbird. Birds in this area may include Black-collared Jay, Barred Fruiteater, Hooded and Scarlet-bellied, and the Choco Endemic Black-chested Mountain-Tanagers.
After this visit you will continue crossing the west slope of the Andes range to arrive at Sachatamia Lodge, located near Mindo, here you will enjoy of delicious lunch and in the afternoon you will have time to walk in the area. Mindo area is part of the Magic Cloud forest and the Choco region, it has a secondary and primary forest with immense biodiversity that includes one of the greatest concentrations of bird species anywhere in the world.
This region has an impressive bird list of 360 species, highlights including the Maroon-tailed Parakeet, Toucan Barbet, Nariño Tapaculo, Golden-headed Quetzal, and Golden and Flame-faced Tanager. In this lodge, you will have time to see the hummingbirds in the feeders of this place where it is possible to see the rare Choco endemics Empress Brilliant and Velvet-Purple Coronet.
After an incredible day enjoying the colorful birds of the Cloud Forest you will return to Quito
