Ecuador is one of the premier destinations for birding in the world, with more than 1,650 species in the continental area plus 38 more in the Galapagos Islands. Geographic good fortune has blessed Ecuador with a wide variety of faunal zones, including some of the richest on this planet, each with its characteristic birds. Ecuador's Amazonian faunal zone alone has more than 600 species of birds, and several other Ecuadorian zones are nearly as rich.
With this high avifauna diversity, Ecuador is considered one of the wonders of the natural world with a high percentage of endemism found in its Choco and Tumbesian ecosystems. Nowhere else on the planet can you find this diversity in such a small country!
