FOLLOWING THE MAMMALS FOOT PRINTS

10 DAYS / 9 NIGHTS

   

This is an unique and wonderful expedition that gives you the opportunity to enjoy of the amazing wildlife of Ecuador while you hike through its different ecosystems. The main aim of this trip is to support the project for the conservation of the spectacled bear and its natural habitat and to let the people know of the incredible mammals that you can find in Ecuador. The best months to spot for bears are from November to January and from June to August.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL TO QUITO, ECUADOR 

Arrival to Quito, where you will be met at the airport by our guide and transferred to your hotel, overnight.

     Set in a colonial style house built in 1738, Hotel Boutique La Casona de la Ronda offers 22 rooms arranged around a beautiful central patio, mixing cultural, traditional and contemporary elements, each one with free Wi-Fi and plasma Tv and other services.  Enjoy all the modern conveniences built into the original facilities; colors and stonewalls that reflect the passing of time. The rooms have been designed to provide an authentic experience that reflects the true atmosphere of the unique colonial center of Quito. (4**** superior)
     Café Cultura is a delightful mix of English tradition and contemporary trend. Some sixty years ago, the hotel was home to one of Quito's oldest families and it was carefully restored over a period of four years, with special detail given to maintaining the unique characteristics of the original interior. The house is hemmed by a beautiful garden, with secluded seating areas for relaxing. (3*** superior)
     La Rábida Hostal: An intimate and charming first-class hotel located in the heart of Quito, near most places of historical interest as well as restaurants, banks, and shops. The old restored house has 11 rooms, each with a private bathroom, telephone, and T.V.; rooms with terrace are available. Moreover, the hotel has a small wine bar and restaurant serving delicious Italian and international cuisine.  (3***)


DAY 2: QUITO – YANACOCHA RESERVE –TANDAYAPA

 

After breakfast you will drive to the northwest of Quito to visit Yanacocha Reserve, located in the high cloud forest on Pichincha’s volcano at 11,300ft. The reserve protects 964 hectares of forest which is home to the endemic hummingbird Black-breasted Puffleg (Eriocnemis nigrivestis). As far as you are aware, the reserve contains the entire world range of this very rare hummingbird. Birds in this area may include Black-collared Jay, Barred Fruiteater, Hooded and Scarlet-bellied and the Choco Endemic Black-chested Mountain-Tanagers.

Amongst mammals, the Spectacled Bear, Andean Fox, Western Mountain Coati, Andean Paca, Northern Pudu, Red Brocket Deer, Oncilla, and Puma are all present but not easy to see. You will follow the puma foot prints that are often seen along the main trail in order to arrive to a strategic place where we have set one of our trapping cameras and probably we will see the images of this incredible mammal.

Box lunch on route and you will continue your trip to reach to Bellavista Lodge, time to rest and at night you will have the opportunity to see the first new carnivore species discovered in the western hemisphere for 35 years, the Olinguito; dinner and overnight.

DAY 3: TANDAYAPA – YUNGUILLA

After breakfast, you will follow the different trails of Bellavista reserve and Tandaya valley roads looking for some of the bird species of this places and with lucky a couple of mammals. Lunch and departure to Yunguilla.  

Yunguilla is a community  that works on ecotourism and organic projects and all its profits are reinvested in the conservation of the cloud forest, important habitat for the Ecuadorian wildlife.

In the afternoon you will travel during one hour to arrive to the entrance of El Cedral reserve, close to there it is possible to visit a strategic place that was carefully selected to set a camera and if you are lucky maybe you will see one of the mammals species that live in the area, return to Yunguilla for dinner and overnight 
    
Yunguilla is a small rural village straddling a dirt road that winds through part of the cloud-forest bioregion of the Ecuadorian Andes. It is home to approximately 300 people and farming is the mainstay of the village.  Here the inhabitants have developed eco-tourism and re-forestation projects, jam and cheese-making facilities, built a community store, and created community organic gardens.

DAY 4: HIKING FROM YUNGUILLA TO SANTA LUCIA CLOUD FOREST RESERVE

 


 After breakfast you will star to hike through the Andean cloud forest towards Santa Lucia reserve, the hike takes approximately 6 hours and on the way you will check on the cameras that we have set on the forest to monitor animals for the wildlife project. And you may possible see pictures of White Collared Pecari, Andean Puma, Spectacled Bear, Dwarf Deer, Andean porcupine, Mountain paca, Andean coati, and others. During your hike you will have great chances to spot birds, especially hummingbirds with more than 30 species recorded including Green-tailed Trainbearer, Shining Sunbeam, Tyrian Metal tail, Sword-billed Hummingbird, Buff-rumped Star frontlet, Buff-tailed Coronets, Collared Inca and White-tailed Hill star, Choco Endemics here may include Brown Inca, Violet-tailed Sylph and Gorged Sun angel; Box lunch on route and then you will continue your trip to arrive to Santa Lucia cloud forest reserve where you will diner and overnight.

     
Santa Lucía eco-lodge and cabanas are located in the heart of the cloud forest on a mountain peak at 1900 meters. It offers beautiful crafted cabanas with private bathrooms and amazing views, besides it offers dorm rooms with shared bathrooms. The hot showers have particularly spectacular views over the forest. Solar panels provide limited electricity in the lodge.

DAY 5: HIKING FROM SANTA LUCIA TO MAQUIPUCUNA RESERVE

After breakfast you will have the chance to visit the different trails of the reserve, this is an area formed by sharp and deeply forested mountains, crystalline streams full of bromeliads and orchids and it is simply a magic place, perfect for adventure and relaxation. Lunch at Santa Lucia and later you will hike to Maquipucuna reserve (approximately 3 hours) on the way you will check more cameras that we have set in the forest to keep track of the wildlife. After dinner possible walk at night looking for nocturnal mammals, return to the lodge to overnight.


     Maquipucuna Reserve is located in the heart of Ecuador`s cloud forest, a place of beauty and serenity. It is 50 miles northwest of Quito and it is a great opportunity of experiencing exotic species of birds specially hummingbirds and flowers in bloom such as orchids and bromeliads.

DAY 6: FULL DAY AT MAQUIPUCUNA  RESERVE

     

This morning while you enjoy of a delicious breakfast you will admire the incredible hummingbirds flying around the feeders, species possible to see are Collared Inka, Speckled Hummingbird, and Purple-bibbed White tip.  After that you will walk through the trails of this private reserve around the lodge. This is an excellent area for birding and you will likely encounter a great deal of bird activity. Exciting birds we hope to encounter include Palm Tanager, Golden Tanager, Orange-billed Sparrow, Andean Solitaire, Masked Trogon, Golden-headed Quetzal, and Crimson-rumped Toucanet. Lunch at the lodge and in the afternoon you will hike across the different trails to check more cameras and to spot more mammals wildlife like Long nosed Armadillo, Collared Pecari, Andean Puma, Andean Tapir, Andean Coati, Don Felipe´s Weasel, Dwarf deer, Opossums, Mountain paca, Andean porcupine. Return to the lodge to rest, diner and overnight.

DAY 7: MAQUIPUCUNA RESERVE - QUITO 

 

Early breakfast and search for more wildlife around the lodge and after an unforgettable expedition at Maquipucuna you will be ready to go back to Quito, lunch at the reserve and late afternoon your guide will drive you to your Quito’s hotel.

DAY 8: QUITO - HIKKING FROM THE CAYAMBE COCA RESERVE TO THE HOT SPRINGS OF PAPALLACTA

  

Early in the morning after breakfast our guide will drive you to the east of the Andes to start a beautiful hike in the Cayambe -Coca Ecological reserve located over 4.000 meters over the sea level. 
You will walk across a very special landscape full of lagoons and rocky mountains where it is possible to spot some native animals from this region such as Andean Fox, White tailed Deer, Brazilian rabbit, Andean Tapir and if you are lucky you will see the Andean Condor. Box lunch on route and in the afternoon you will be picked up by your driver to take you to the magic hot springs of Papalllacta, where you will enjoy of its therapeutic baths and spa; dinner and overnight.

     Termas de Papallacta SPA, is located at 60 kilometers east of Quito. Perched on a high Andean valley at the entrance route to the Ecuadorian Amazon jungle. The resort offers its visitors healthy spa treatments, recreation and adventure. The hotel is built in a beautiful Andean architecture that combines wood, stone and thatched roofs.

     Guango Lodge lies at a higher elevation (about 2,700 meters) on Ecuador's eastern slope, only 11 kms down the main Interoceanic Highway from Papallacta. This area is located in a zone classified as humid temperate forest, characterized by its more stunted trees (and thicker canopy), cooler climate, and different bird and plant composition. 3***

DAY 9: VISIT THE CAYAMBE-COCA RESERVE AND ANTISANA ECOLOGICAL RESERVE

        

Early in the morning you will hike in the Cayambe-Coca Reserve to try to spot the Spectacled Bear, in this area there is a very specific place that is frequently visited by this incredible mammal, here you will follow the Spectacled bear prints and if you are lucky maybe you will find it. Later you will be driven back to the inter-Andean valley, lunch on route and in the afternoon you will visit the Antisana Ecological Reserve where it is possible to observe animals like Black-faced Ibis, Andean Fox,  Silvery Grebe, Andean Teal, Andean Duck, Andean Coot, and as well as many land birds such as Andean Gull, Andean Lapwing and Carunculated Caracara. Here you have a high probability to be in contact with the majestic Andean Condor Late afternoon return to Quito to your hotel to overnight

DAY 10: QUITO – HOME FLIGHT

After an unforgettable expedition in Ecuador full of nature and adventure you will be transferred to the airport to catch your national or international flight.
