ECUADOR AND ITS MAGIC CLOUD FOREST

This trip offers a visit to the Cloud Forest, an ecosystem with many waterfalls, crystalline rivers, hummingbirds, butterflies, orchids, ferns, and a great variety of flowers. Besides this nature magic place is considered one of the best places for birdwatching.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN QUITO, ECUADOR

On your arrival in Ecuador, your guide will be waiting for you in the airport to meet and transfer you to your hotel, overnight.

DAY 2: QUITO – MINDO

Breakfast and travel to Yanacocha Reserve located in the high cloud forest on Pichincha’s volcano at 11,300 ft. Traveling to the northwest of Quito, crossing the west slope of the Andes range through the old road Nono – Mindo, one of the best areas to spot for birds. Yanacocha reserve is the beginning of this route, it protects 964 ha of elfin Polylepis forest which is home to many hummingbirds including a very scarce and endemic species the Black Breasted Puffleg.

Time to walk through the trails of this reserve to learn about the flora and fauna of the area and to enjoy the incredible landscapes, box lunch on a route surrounded by colorful hummingbirds. Late afternoon you will continue your trip to Mindo where you will dinner and overnight.

DAY 3: THE AMAZING CLOUD FOREST

After breakfast, you will go to Mindo to visit the butterfly farm, where the local guides will explain to you about the metamorphosis of this insect and will introduce you to a different world, the butterflies' world where they can eat from your hands. The butterfly exhibition has 25 varieties flying freely in a greenhouse that is approximately 644 square meters.

This is one of the biggest exhibits in Ecuador due to its size and amount of species. After this visit, you will have the opportunity to enjoy tubing, an activity where you can feel the adrenaline in your body while you will go down the Nambillo river.

After lunch you will enjoy the Canopy Tour, this is an amazing journey where you will travel through 10 cables of different sizes that permit you to fly from tree to tree like a bird and enjoy the amazing landscape. Late in the afternoon, you will return to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

DAY 4: MINDO – QUITO

This morning after a cup of hot coffee, you will visit the famous Paz de las Aves Refuge where you will have the opportunity to live one of the most amazing experiences, visiting the cock of the rock lek, where during the breeding season, the males produce a special sound and fly like real acrobats waiting that the female chooses one of them to mate.

Besides here it is possible to see three species of Antpittas, the Giant Antpitta, the Moustached Antpitta, and the Yellow Breasted Antpitta, beautiful birds that are really difficult to see. Return to the main house of this reserve to enjoy a typical breakfast of this region.

Return to Sachatamia lodge, lunch and in the afternoon you will walk through the trails of Sachatamia Lodge enjoying this forest and learning about the plants of animals that live in this habitat. This is an excellent area for birding and you will likely encounter a great deal of bird activity. After lunch return to Quito to overnight in your hotel.

DAY 5: QUITO – NATIONAL OR INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT

After an unforgettable expedition in Ecuador full of nature and adventure, you will be transferred to the airport to catch your flight.
